Mihyun takes a part time job. It’s nothing that bad, but nothing that good either. She stays until late at night, wiping off the tables of the customers who come and go, mostly smelling of soju and regret. Her boss tells her the place is a popular place for work parties.
“And, what do you do?” A customer asks her once, an old man who always came by and smiled a lot, the smile winning a little bit of affection Mihyun every time.
“Me? I just work here…” He smiles at her, and she suddenly misses her dad.
“And I’m a trainee. I’m...going to make my debut.” Speak it and it will become true. That’s what her grandmother said once. The customer claps, before drinking a little more.
“Alright, alright! Debut, and come back here to celebrate with me. I’ll buy you some drinks.”
Mihyun laughs.

“It’s called beer pong,” Hyejin explains. Her eyes are focused on the red cups in front of her, leaning forward then back on the tips of her toes. “I learned it when I was in America for like five months. A bunch of dudes showed me how.”
Mihyun eyes follow the ball as it lands in Shiah’s cup, and Hyejin smiles. Shiah’s face goes sour when she picks up a cup, and looks over it, like the contents of it might kill her.
“Try drinking it in one shot.” Mihyun offers, because she wasn’t sure how else to the tension on Shiah’s face go away. Hyejin nods at her suggestion, maybe from excitement at winning, or the beer already floating around in her system.
“Beer isn’t even that strong!”
Like that would help.

The other trainees probably think she’s a thug. She hears whispers, in the bathroom, how she sometimes smells like cigarettes and alcohol. They wonder why the company doesn’t just fire her.
She remembers the time the staff did ask her about it. And she cried from her exhaustion, how hard this was, living in a small room by yourself, how she was getting sick of the smell of restaurant food and cleaning tables. An older staff calmed her, she remembers. They never asked her about what she did again.
One day, she’s sitting against the mirror, falling in and out of sleep, when she hears a voice, very close to her say, “I don’t believe what they’re saying anyways.”
When she wakes up, no one is there.
+
“So you’re a trainee?” Shiah asks, cheeks red and smile bright. Hyejin is snuggling her face into Mihyun’s thighs, before she looks at Mihyun’s face and reaches up. Somewhere in the night, the two of them had gotten more carefree than planned, and were currently smothering Mihyun with their smiles and affections. She stares at the plate of cookies on the tae, and reaches to get one.
“Is that why you’re hair is so blonde and dead?” Hyejin asks honestly.
Mihyun self-consciously reaches up and touches her head, running her fingers through it.
“Was. I was one.”
“Ooohh.” Shiah and Hyejin say at the same time. “That’s tough.”
“Yeah.”
+
Some older trainee, who was more skilled and more friendly, slides into the seat across from her during her break, and smiles. She thinks her name is Hyojung.
“So this is where you escape too.”
Somewhere in the company, there is a small forgotten room, where the lights don’t come on, and spiders love to make webs. Mihyun had discovered it by accident one day, in a sleepy haze. She slept on the floor of the room and woke up there, a baby spider on her hand.
Today, there is no spider, only the older trainee girls covered in sweat, smiling at her. Mihyun offers a slight grin back, but she thinks she looks like she’s in pain.
Somewhere along the line, maybe in between the training and the late night snacks, they become best friends. Mihyun wonders if it was just the need of wanting to be close to someone.

‘So, what do you think,” crunch. “Are aliens really out there?”
Shiah rests her feet on Hyejin’s thighs, pressing down and leaning back. The cool winter air drifts in from the window, kissing of their cheeks, and she sighs. “I mean, why wouldn’t they be out there right?”
Crunch. Mihyun hums, dusting off the cookie dust from her fingers. “Well…”
“Well?” Shiah hangs her mouth open, waiting, before Hyejin sticks a cookie into her mouth, before smiling.
“I’m not really sure about aliens, but maybe angels.” Mihyun offers, and for a brief moment she regrets everything. She’s spilling it all. It’s like her entire life flashes in her memory, and she sighs deeply.
It must be the cookies. Why was the neighbor baking weed cookies? She holds one up.
“Guys, these are gross.”

Mihyun wasn’t sure where Arin lived in the world. Sometimes, she’s massaging her at three in the morning, using text slang and words Mihyun has never heard of. Sometimes though, she messages her at times that are reasonable enough, around nine at night. Like now, for instance.

Mimi~
dearest ^^
9:08pm
hello??????
it says you read this…..
:/
Of course, this should have been a reasonable time, if only it didn’t have two, for lack of the better word, drunk woman giggling and trying to wrestle the phone from Mihyun’s grasp before she could reply.
“Who’s that? Someone we know?”
‘No,’ Mihyun thinks, ‘thank god.’
9:11pm
srry.
whst up ?
9:12pm
have you ever been to italy?
i mean, i havent so i was curious
Something about the question, maybe how innocent it was, made Mihyun laugh.
9:14pm
no i havent actually.
“Haven’t what?” Hyejin asks from the floor on the other side of the room. Apparently. Mihyun was talking out loud
+
“I’m leaving.” She tells Hyojung one day. She’s already finished crying, already quit her job, and was just ready, to get out of here. She thinks it might have been a spontaneous thing, when she asked the general manager about leaving the company.
Flashes of past conversations come to mind. “Let’s get famous and travel the world! Everyone will know us!” They had promised. The words, flashing in her head, left a bitter feeling.
She can see the moment Hyojung just deflates, and reaches out to take her hands. Hyojung doesn’t ask why. It simply doesn’t matter.
+
Later in the night, Hyejin had brought out her lamp from the room, along with her thin blanket that had a star pattern, and turned off all the lights.
“I’m pretty sure that’s a fire hazard.” Shiah slurs. Mihyun nods in agreement, before the motion makes her feel slightly dizzy. Hyejin shushes then before smiling a wide smile and covering the lamp in the room with the blanket. “It could burn. Is it flammable?”
The ceiling lights up. While, there are no stars showing, the room is now covered in a soft blue, and something about the site is so gorgeous to Mihyun, so wonderful.
“Shut up and make a wish.”
And Mihyun, in her slight high, wishes for the first thing that comes to mind.
Hope.

I didn't know this part will hurt this much right after finishing the story ;_; Loved that hurt, though, and the bittersweet-ness. And I loved the sense of understanding in Hyojung's reaction. This was really a touching fic, so thank you writing it (and for all these emotions).
"The ceiling lights up. While, there are no stars showing," gdi! <3
