[Jiho/Seunghee] on applying scientific research guidelines to magic: a proposal (for @acatonthemoon)
Title: on applying scientific research guidelines to magic: a proposal (for @acatonthemoon)
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Jiho/Seunghee. Jiho, Seunghee, Binnie, Mimi (cameo).
Word-Count: 1361
Summary: Jiho does a lot of work for no reason. Alternatively: Yoobin is bad at being Jiho's moral compass but it works out anyway.
Author Notes: My recipient requested an au where the members were at magical school and learned a new spell/got up to mischief. I took a few liberties with my interpretation, but I hope that you enjoy it! ^^
i. always use peer reviewed sources
Considering the bad reputation love potions had, Jiho wondered if the pages upon pages of recipes from a simple online search were a bad sign. It probably was, since any books on the topic had been removed from the library long ago. She had no idea if a single potion among those she had found would work. The only real upside to everything was that she was, in fact, a witch. So at least she knew what would or wouldn’t poison and/or kill someone. Any potion falling under that category was easy enough to discard.
Combing through the comments on the remaining recipes was a chore. There were undoubtedly bots generating positive reviews for some but it took forever to identify them. Any recipe with a drastically negative review was also discarded. Trusting anonymous strangers was definitely frowned upon, as much in magical academia as in mundane academia. But the ban on love potions at school really left her with no choice. She would simply have to keep trying.
“Do it for her,” she whispered to herself.
“This is unethical,” Yoobin said loudly from her own desk on the other side of their shared room.
Jiho decided that she would never tell Yoobin another of her brilliant plans.
ii. repetition is the key to success
After much strife and borrowing a rather concerning combination of books from the library, Jiho managed to bribe Yoobin into creating a spreadsheet using the recipes that finally made it through the rigourous screening process.
“It really is unethical,” Yoobin reiterated for the millionth time as she sent Jiho the aggregated recipe, all the ingredients averaged out for optimum efficiency. All Jiho could really tell is that the end result should be a soft milky pink and smell sweetly floral. It was not a lot to go on but it was what she had.
“It’s not to make her fall in love with me,” Jiho said stubbornly. “It’s just to…encourage any feelings she might already have.”
“You should really just ask her out,” Yoobin sighed.
“It’s not that simple.”
iii. always have a clear aim
Hyun Seunghee was 4 inches shorter than Jiho and a year older and possibly the cutest witch in their entire college. She had the voice of a fairy.
Jiho had fallen hard for her almost as soon as they met. Sometimes, just sometimes, she thought that it might be mutual. It’s in the way Seunghee pouts and turns pink when Jiho wraps an arm around her to tease her about her height and the way Seunghee gives in to hug Jiho no matter what else she might have been doing, the second Jiho asks.
But better safe than sorry. Right?
iv. repetition is the key to success
The first time Jiho tried to make her potion, it rather literally blew up in her face. It was fortunate that the only other witch in the brewing room was Mihyun, who had simply laughed at her bad luck and didn’t bother asking what Jiho was attempting.
Mihyun may have been easy-going but she probably would have ratted Jiho out if she knew it was a love potion. Anyone would.
The second time Jiho attempted to brew it, it ended up a murky fuchsia and it just didn’t smell quite right. She tasted it and nearly spat it right back out. A quick poll of the upperclassmen, Seunghee included, concluded that she needed to focus her intention more while brewing if a potion wasn’t coming out quite right.
“You can do it,” Seunghee said, squeezing Jiho’s hand in both of her own soft hands. “All you have to do is focus.”
The third time, the scent was right, like a rose-scented syrup. But the potion was more red than pink and Jiho hid in the closet for two hours while Yoobin fussed in concern at Jiho’s refusal to explain why she was acting so strangely. Jiho just couldn’t stop thinking about Seunghee’s hands while she brewed. They were so soft. Seunghee’s skin was so soft and Jiho had started to wonder if Seunghee’s skin was that soft…everywhere else.
It was meant to be a love potion. Not a sex potion.
The fourth time, Jiho clutched a chunk of rose quartz to keep her focused and to reroute all of her energy into the potion. It came out tasting of floral candy and looking like strawberry milk. It was perfect.
v. determine appropriate method of delivery
In the end, the biggest hurdle in Jiho’s way turned out to be the part where she actually gave Seunghee the love potion. For all the work she had put into it, she found that she simply couldn’t do it.
Tricking Seunghee into it would be just as unethical as Yoobin said. It would make Jiho just another example of why Love Potions Are Bad.
In the end, she took her three weeks of hard work, neatly stored in a jar, and headed down to the dungeons to dispose of it.
In the end, Jiho walked right into Seunghee on her way and dropped the jar, sending the potion spilling across Seunghee’s cute white shoes.
“Oh god,” Jiho whispered, horrified. “I am so sorry.”
vi. ‘do it. just do it.’ – ancient proverb
“Oh, no” Seunghee said, “don’t worry about it.” While clearly worrying about it.
“I am so sorry,” Jiho repeated, crouching and trying to mop up the mess on Seunghee’s shoes with a charmed handkerchief. “I was just on my way to throw this out and I guess I didn’t see you.”
“Is that a short joke?” Seunghee demanded, putting her hands on her hips and scowling down at Jiho.
Jiho looked up, brain freezing momentarily on how close she was to Seunghee’s knees. They were cute knees. “Uh. No?”
“You don’t sound so sure. What is that, anyway?” Seunghee asked, crouching as well and taking the handerkerchief. She did a much better job of cleaning the mess than Jiho had.
“…love potion,” Jiho admitted grudgingly.
Seunghee looked up from her shoes, hand going still where it had been patting at her shoes. “Oh? Is there someone you like?”
“No,” Jiho said immediately. Then, “yes.”
“Do I know them?” Seunghee asked.
Jiho hoped that she wasn’t imagining the undercurrent of disappointment in Seunghee’s voice. The voice in the back her head, which sounded suspiciously like Yoobin (oh god, maybe it really was Yoobin), reminded her that she should just ask Seunghee out. Seriously.
“Yeah. It actually…I actually made it for you,” Jiho admitted, staring at the puddle of pink on the floor between their feet. “And then I realized that Yoobin was totally right? She was totally right. Love potions are banned because they’re totally unethical and it doesn’t really matter what the intention is, I should just ask you on a date, so I was just on my way to get rid of it and um…yep.”
“Jiho.”
Jiho always thought that Seunghee must secretly be a fairy because hearing that sweet voice say her name was enough to get her attention every time. This one was no exception. She looked up and found herself face to face with Seunghee’s sweet smile. They were crouched together over the empty jar and puddle of love potion and it should have felt silly but all Jiho felt were butterflies.
“I’d love to go on a date,” Seunghee said, soft and almost giggling.
“Even though I was going to give you a love potion?” Jiho asked, gaping.
“It’s kind of cute,” Seunghee decided, hands cupping her cheeks as she smiled at Jiho. “Yes. Even though you were going to give me a love potion.”
Well, okay, Jiho thought. “How’s Saturday sound?”
“Great.” Seunghee leaned forward to kiss Jiho’s cheek. “Just perfect.”
vii. in conclusion
“You know, I made a love potion myself,” Seunghee confided one night, months later, as they drank Seunghee’s red wine hot chocolate.
“Wait, you did?” Jiho asked, frowning.
“I drank it and thought of you,” Seunghee said sweetly. “You’re drinking it right now.”
Jiho squawked indignantly.
(“You’re perfect for each other,” Yoobin confirmed when Jiho later complained. “You’re both the worst.”)
