[JinE/Mimi] Plan H (for @yongsunnie)

Title: Plan H (for @yongsunnie/yongsunnie)
Characters/Pairings: Mimi/Jine, ot8
Rating: G
Warnings: -
Word-Count: 2685
Summary: (Sky High AU) Mihyun never has a plan, especially when it comes to Shin Hyejin
Author Notes: I hope you'll enjoy the fic! It's a little silly but I had fun writing it :)

“Mihyun, stop staring at her.”

Mihyun blinked, suddenly pulled out of her reverie by Hyejin’s voice, which actually came from Seunghee's mouth. Her friend stared at her with an unimpressed expression and Shiah, seated next to Mihyun, giggled softly.

“Please don’t do that,” Mihyun whined, looking down at her mostly untouched plate. “And I wasn’t staring.”

“Sure,” Seunghee said, this time using her real voice. She rolled her eyes. “She probably thinks you’re a creep by now.”

Mihyun opened her mouth to retort but got distracted by the subject of their conversation turning her head in their general direction. Hyejin seemed to be looking for something or someone, squinting across the cafeteria. She turned away without noticing the big smile Mihyun was sending her way and left through the main door, her arm tucked under her best friend’s, a short girl with long brown hair.

“Ah, this is too funny,” Shiah laughed, her mouth curled around the straw of her strawberry milk box.

“Mihyun is head over heels for Super Girl,” Seunghee teased with half a grin.

“I’m- I’m not!” Mihyun pouted. “She’s just… she’s pretty.”

“You do realize she’s graduating in just a couple of months, right? And they’ll assign her a sidekick from her promotion.”

“Thanks for the encouragement,” Mihyun replied sarcastically. “Anyway... yes, I know. Why would a super strong girl who can fly want anything to do with someone like me?”

“Don’t be so hard on yourself,” Shiah advised. “She can still get a girlfriend even if she’s a super heroine, you know. You should ask her out before it’s too late.”

And that would have been good advice if Hyejin actually knew who Mihyun was beyond simple formalities. They had talked before; there weren’t that many students at Sky High, after all, and they’d had the same lockers ever since Mihyun enrolled in the school three years ago. With only six lockers between them, Hyejin definitely recognized Mihyun when she walked by and would sometimes give her a polite smile. Or maybe that was Mihyun's imagination's doing.

Shin Hyejin had won the super powers jackpot. While powers had been more varied and extraordinary lately, the good old strength and flight powers would never get out of fashion. As far as Mihyun could tell, Hyejin had tons of friends, good grades, and she wrote for the school’s newspaper every week (page 12, next to Bae Yoobin’s weekly politics column).

Shin Hyejin was way out of her league.

Mihyun sat at the back of the classroom during the juniors’ daily Hero Support Revision Hour, chin nested in her palm and staring at the chalkboard behind the teacher. She decided that she had nothing to lose and should probably chat with Hyejin sometimes. However, she didn’t have a plan - in fact, she rarely did.

“The worst thing that can happen is that she’s going to punch you in the face,” Jiho, Mihyun’s childhood friend and sophomore in the hero division at Sky High, told her in an attempt to reassure her while they rode the bus back home. A few seconds later she started laughing, leaning against Yoobin for support.

“How is that funny?” Yoobin asked, looking up from her phone - which she’d been using to scroll through Instiz with nothing but her eyes - a horrified expression plastered all over her face. “Mihyun unnie might get seriously hurt if that happens!”

Through giggles, Jiho said Mihyun unnie just thought ‘I wouldn’t mind that’.

*

Jiho had spent a couple of hours on the phone with Mihyun that evening, trying to convince her that maybe the key to her problems would be to ask a small favor from the latest Terror of Sky High, Choi Yewon. The freshman, who had a soft round face and did her best to be extra nice to everybody, had gotten the gift - or perhaps, the curse - to be able to control minds, a power that was common among super villains. Because of this, most freshmen avoided her and she somehow ended up hanging out with Jiho and Yoobin, who had taken a liking to her.

The next morning, after making Jiho promise she would not involve the freshman in her lack of love life, Mihyun walked dreadfully towards her locker, immediately spotting Hyejin’s light brown hair through the crowd. She’d gone through many scenarios in her head while staring at her bedroom ceiling, trying to come up with the best way to greet the older girl without sounding creepy or desperate.

“Hi,” she croaked out as she reached her locker, her hands shaking when she reached up to turn the lock.

Hyejin turned to glance in her direction, looking like she’d never expect Mihyun to talk to her, but her surprised expression quickly turned into a warm smile.

“Oh, hello… Mihyun, right?”

“Yes,” Mihyun smiled back, dropping her backpack on her feet. Hyejin kept smiling at her, looking somewhat curious, and Mihyun realized she was waiting for her to say something else. She cleared her throat loudly. “It’s getting chilly outside, right, unnie?”

If she doesn’t punch me in the face, I will do it myself, Mihyun thought dreadfully.

“Of course, fall is here,” Hyejin replied with a soft nod. “You need to dress warmly so you don’t catch a cold.”

“You too, unnie,” Mihyun said.

“I have to go,” Hyejin apologized, quickly looking over her shoulder and back at Mihyun, her eyes crinkling at the sides. “Have a good day!”

“You too, unnie!” Mihyun called after Hyejin, who floated away and disappeared in the crowd.

When a very sad-looking tennis ball slowly rolled into the classroom, Seunghee didn’t even dare to laugh.

“Did she punch you?” she asked, concerned, after Mihyun had transformed back into her real form and sat down at her desk.

“I wish,” Mihyun pouted, leaning her head against the cold wood of the table. “She was so nice, I don’t know what to do.”

Seunghee combed her fingers through Mihyun’s hair, the gesture both comforting and calming. “That’s good though, isn’t it? Hyejin unnie doesn’t not want to be around you.”

Mihyun hummed pensively.

*

The next time Mihyun got the chance to say more than a simple Hello to Hyejin was two weeks later, during her weekly free period on Thursday, when she decided to take a well-deserved nap in the back of the library. It was one of the rare occasions where she had a plan, and of course her plan was destined to fall apart.

She walked between the aisles, eyeing books quickly as she passed by them until she reached the back era where a few desks were cramped together near the windows.

And there she was, sitting at the desk next to Mihyun’s usual spot, her head tilted down over a large textbook that Mihyun would probably never have to even open in her entire life as a sidekick.

Hyejin unnie doesn’t not want to be around you, she heard Seunghee’s voice in her head and, with the comforting knowledge that she hadn’t been punched anywhere yet, she made her way towards the girl.

“Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here?” Mihyun whispered, making Hyejin jump a little before their eyes met. It took a second for Hyejin to register what was happening and then she smiled, motioning to the next table with her hand.

“Sure, no problem!”

Mihyun laughed nervously and dropped her belongings on the desk, quietly observing Hyejin as she turned back to her textbook. Mihyun’s new plan was not to take a nap but rather to act like she was also studying and, that way, she’d get to enjoy Hyejin’s silent company. But that plan quickly came to a halt as well when Hyejin sighed dramatically, sprawling her upper body onto the desk.

“I’m so tired,” she said, not quite a whisper but it didn’t matter as no one else was in the library. “Ethics classes are the worst, don’t you agree?”

Mihyun shrugged. “I don’t mind them. I suppose the curriculum is harder for heroes.”

Hyejin lifted her head from the table, her mouth forming a small ‘o’. “So you’re a sidekick?”

Mihyun nodded awkwardly, suddenly feeling very uninteresting.

“What can you do?” Hyejin asked, sounding genuinely curious.

“Oh, nothing much,” Mihyun answered, scratching her head. “I shapeshift.”

Hyejin moved her lips as if she were about to whistled. “How come you’re a sidekick then? Shapeshifting is pretty impressive.”

Mihyun felt her cheeks warm up a little. “I can only shapeshift into small things. Inanimate things. A tissue box is pretty much the biggest I can manage.”

Hyejin chuckled and Mihyun couldn’t help but do the same, hiding her face in her hands.

“That’s awesome,” Hyejin said when her laughter calmed down. “My powers are pretty boring.”

“How is flying boring?!” Mihyun exclaimed as quietly as she could manage, leaning over as if that would help keeping the volume of her voice down.

Hyejin sighed. “It’s so old-school… kids keep getting these cool new powers... You know Bae Yoobin? She’s a sidekick too, she writes for the school newspaper. Anyway, I heard she can manipulate technology with her mind. Isn’t that amazing? Apparently, her and Kim Jiho are already paired up for graduation.”

Mihyun was so busy watching Hyejin talk, her animated hand movements and the way her eyes lighted up capturing her attention, that she almost missed her cue to reply.

“Oh, right, I heard about that. I’m pretty close with Jiho, actually.”

Hyejin tilted her head slightly to the side. “Oh, you are?”

Before Mihyun could reply, a short girl wearing light pants and a dark blue sweater appeared next to Hyejin, her smile bright as she shoved her hips against Hyejin’s back.

“We should go study outside,” the girl, who Mihyun recognized as Choi Hyojung, whispered to her friend. “The sun is so warm, we have to enjoy it before it’s gone for the winter!”

Hyejin’s face scrunched up in distaste and Mihyun wondered if maybe the sunlight was just a side-effect of Hyojung’s ability to manipulate light.

“Oh, hello!” Hyojung greeted Mihyun with a polite bow, which Mihyun reciprocated. Choi Hyojung had a weird effect on people: her ability to talk to animals, her consistent good mood, and the fact that she was the president of the school council would sometimes make the people around her uncomfortable. “You’re Kim Mihyun, right? Yewonnie talked about you the other day, it’s nice to meet you.”

The atmosphere suddenly felt very dry. Of course Hyojung knew Yewonnie, because Hyojung knew everyone and Yewonnie was a freshman hero who was being treated unfairly by her peers, so there was no way she wouldn’t know her. But Choi Yewon also knew Jiho, and if Yewon had talked about Mihyun to the student council president…

Hyojung’s smile grew even bigger when Mihyun shot her an alarmed look.

“Come on,” Hyojung hurried, grabbing Hyejin’s sleeve and pulling her up. “You can come with us if you want!” she adressed Mihyun.

“Actually,” Mihyun sputtered, quickly gathering her things, “I have something to do, you go ahead.”

Hyojung nodded and dragged Hyejin away, who turned around and mouthed Sorry to Mihyun over her shoulder. Mihyun watched them go through the aisle, Hyejin shrugging Hyojung’s hand off from around her arm and then disappearing behind a large bookshelf.

*

“I swear I didn’t do anything!” Yewon cried, her hands pressed hard against both of her pink cheeks. “I just told Hyojung unnie… that Jiho unnie… she said her friend Mihyun had a crush on someone…”

“I believe you,” Mihyun sighed, leaning back against her chair. Her, Shiah and Seunghee had been joined by Jiho, Yoobin and Yewon upon Mihyun’s request - she’d wanted to kick Jiho’s ass, but as it turned out, maybe the ass she needed to kick was Hyojung’s for figuring everything out.

“I’m not allowed to use my powers, anyway, and that’s what I told Jiho unnie,” Yewon continued, glaring at her friend who looked like an animal who’d been trapped. “I could get expelled if I do and I just got here!”

“But really,” Jiho cut in, trying to save herself while Yoobin wrapped her arm protectively around Yewon’s shoulder and Shiah, from the opposite end of the table, stretched her arm to give Yewon an extra serving of dessert. “Are you sure she knows you like Hyejin unnie? I thought Shiah was the one who knew everyt-”

“SHH!!” Mihyun quickly interrupted her and they all fell silent. A bunch of seniors walked so close to their table that one of them bumped into it and quickly apologized, then turned back to his two friends who were arguing loudly about something while two more boys behind them seemed to be lost in their own world as they listened to something on shared earbuds.

“Only if I’m told it,” Shiah specified when the seniors were far enough. Her arm shrank back to its normal size.

“She had to know,” Mihyun answered. “You should have seen the way she looked at me, it was terrifying.”

Yoobin nodded, mumbling something about Hyojung secretly being a demon. Seunghee hit her fist on the table, looking like she was ready to walk into battle.

“You have two choices, Mihyun. Either you tell Hyejin you like her and it becomes awkward, or Hyojung tells her first and Hyejin punches you in the face.”

Jiho frowned. “Mihyun unnie doesn’t like either idea this time.”

“Is there no third option?” Mihyun whined. She had never told anyone that she liked them, mostly because she had never liked anyone quite enough for it to be worth a confession. She didn’t know what to do or how to do it; she really did not have a plan.

“Be strong,” Seunghee said solemnly, and to Mihyun’s horror, everyone around the table shared the same expression. They all looked at her with a mix of hope and mockery. “You can do this. And remember, Yewon-ah can help if things go wrong.”

“I WILL NOT!”

*

Mihyun had almost forgotten about the whole Hyejin, with exams approaching dangerously fast and all of her friends finding their interest in her love life fading in favour of studying, until one morning when she was emptying her bag into her locker and, from the corner of her eyes, she saw Hyejin’s boots stop in front of her own locker, a couple of feet away.

“I like your outfit!” was how Hyejin greeted her, her eyes kind as Mihyun stood straight, rapidly checking over her own outfit in case something was wrong and Hyejin was making fun of her.

Everything seemed perfectly fine. “I like you too.”

There was a long pause, during which Hyejin’s eyes widened and Mihyun realized what she had actually said. She gasped and covered her mouth with both hands, horrified.

“I…” Hyejin said, speechless.

“I like yours, too!” Mihyun clarified in a panic, bowing apologetically, feeling like all the blood in her body was coming up to her face. “That’s what I meant! I’m so sorry, I didn’t… I…”

They stared at each other, as if time had stopped for them while the rest of the student rushed inside, almost knocking into them as they walked past on their way to class.

And Hyejin laughed.

“I like you, too,” she said, and Mihyun couldn’t tear her eyes away from the older girl’s cheeks, which had taken a pink tint. Then the words registered in her mind and she stopped breathing, feeling like her body was about to shapeshift into a puddle of nerves.

“You do?!” she managed to reply, frozen in place.

Hyejin closed her locker and floated across the distance that separated her from Mihyun, landing graciously just in front of her. Although she knew the girl was shorter than her, it was the first time she actually felt that difference as she looked down at Hyejin’s smiling face.

“Hyojung said I should have told you earlier, but it seems you did all the work!”

Mihyun wondered if Hyejin would agree to punch her best friend in the face.

this fic is so cute and funny! (the tennis ball scene.. seunghee didnt laugh but i sure did ) and the confession scene was classic, i love awkward mimi!!

also i never watched sky high but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the fic at all, you did a really good job of explaining the system naturally in your writing instead of doing a word dump.
